Acupuncture is a practice which uses needles to trigger specific points on the skin. It is a minimally invasive method which is effective at stimulating the central nervous system. This causes the release of chemicals in the muscles, brain and spinal cord which in turn may stimulate the body’s healing abilities and boost mental and physical wellness.
Relief of Chronic Pain
Acupuncture can help to decrease lower back and knee pain associated with osteoarthritis. A meta-analysis published in 2017 by Pain journal studied almost 18, 000 patients and found that one course of acupuncture therapy reduced chronic pain for more than 12 months.
Control Nausea and Vomiting
Acupuncture has been found to be an effective treatment in chemotherapy patients suffering from nausea and vomiting. In a systematic review published in 2013 by the Journal of Clinical Oncology looked at 41 randomized control trials and concluded that acupuncture is both safe and beneficial to reducing symptoms of nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients.
Prevention and Reduction of Headaches and Migraines
Research points to the beneficial impact of acupuncture on headache as well as migraine pain. In a systematic review by Cochrane library of 22 trials it was concluded that acupuncture treatment may have similar effectiveness to drug treatments for migraines.
